🎶 WCS Dance Etiquette – Made Simple
We want everyone to feel comfortable and welcome. Here are some easy tips on how to contribute to a great atmosphere at parties, events, and workshops.
🗣 Giving Feedback – The Friendly Way
Golden Rule:
- Only give feedback if someone asks for it.
- Always be kind and constructive.
- Exception: If something feels uncomfortable or unsafe – speak up. A “no” always means no.
Want feedback? Here’s how to ask:
- “Could you give me some feedback after our dance? I’d love for you to watch out for ____.”
🫴 Asking Someone to Dance
Be clear and kind:
- “Would you like to dance?”
- “Would you like to lead me / follow me?”
Good to know:
- Ask clearly and respectfully.
- A “no” must always be respected.
-
If you decline, be kind – and maybe offer a dance later:
- “Maybe later – I’m taking a break right now.”
- Don’t pull someone onto the floor or use commands (“Come on, dance with me!”).
- Anyone can ask – leaders, followers, switches.
- Be inclusive: Ask people of all ages, genders, and skill levels.
🎥 Filming at Socials and Competitions
At Socials/Parties:
- Always ask before filming a dance.
- Be clear about what you want to use the video for (private lessons, social media, etc.).
- Film discreetly – don’t block others or circle around dancing couples.
- Don’t film pros, all-stars, or champions at parties – they just want to enjoy themselves and dance with friends. That’s what J’n’J and shows are for.
At Competitions:
- Only film if someone specifically asks you to.
- Focus fully on the person you’re filming – don’t get distracted.
- If you’re asking someone to film for you, be polite and understanding. Sometimes people are busy or not in the mood.
🎉 Party Basics – Social Dance Tips
- Respect the floor: Try not to bump into others or invade their space.
- If the floor is crowded, make your steps smaller and tighten your frame.
- Focus on your dance partner – not the crowd.
-
Hygiene: Smelling good is nice – smelling neutral is even better.
- Avoid strong perfume or deodorant – many people are sensitive to scents.
- If you sweat a lot, bring extra shirts or a small towel.
- Steal Dances: Always ask before joining.
-
Respect boundaries: If someone touches you in a way that feels wrong – say something.
- Be calm and friendly – it may have been an accident.
- But it’s always okay to clearly express your personal boundaries.
-
Can’t say it right away? You can also talk to them later:
- “Hey, during our dance, I noticed / something happened / you did ___. That made me uncomfortable. Could you please be more mindful next time?”
